Latinx Parent-Involved Shared Book Reading Interventions and Children’s Language Skills: A Systematic Review (Poster 37)

Sat, April 13, 7:45 to 9:15am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

This systematic review synthesized shared book reading interventions designed to improve the language proficiency of Latinx students. The studies reviewed for this systematic review focus on studies where the caregiver provided the reading intervention. My search led to 1392 records, and out of this number, 13 studies met the criteria. Findings from a careful read of these studies indicated mixed outcomes. In some studies, shared book reading yielded a small or moderate effect on student language proficiency. Other studies did not show any effect on children’s language outcomes. Moderators demonstrated to have different effect sizes among Latinx children's language outcomes. It is important to pay attention to the reading outcomes of Latinx children and involve parents in children’s education.
