Abstract

This study focuses on the perspectives of undergraduate Latina students involved in establishing a Latina-oriented sorority at a predominantly white institution with aspirations of becoming a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI). Using a LatCrit analytical framework, the study specifically explores students’ experiences as Latina students at a PWI and their strong commitment to establishing a Latina-oriented sorority. Findings suggest that a Latina-oriented sorority offers Latinx students an opportunity to feel like they belong in the university by: giving them the opportunity to develop socially and professionally; allowing them space to explore the complexity and diversity of Latinx identities; and to hold the university accountable of serving its Latinx student population. For aspiring HSIs, these findings are essential to truly serve Latinx students.
