Community colleges serve an important role in the U.S. higher education system due to their mission to provide open access, diverse academic programs, and important skills to students, particularly those who are racially/ethnically minoritized and low-income. This study critiques how scholarship on community college has been underpublished in top-tier higher education and education journals and examines topical themes and methodological prevalence in that literature. The insufficient quantity and publication of community college scholarship points to the further examination needed of studying community colleges as well as specific topical themes that needed additional exploration in that literature. The methodological disparities highlight differences in the broader discourse about and familiarity with community colleges.
