Mino-bimaaduziwin (A Good Life): Decolonizing and Indigenizing Mental Health Programs and Services for Postsecondary Students

Abstract

Post-secondary institutions are uniquely positioned to provide a pivotal role in promoting mental health and wellbeing and addressing student mental health issues.

Growing in both frequency and complexity, student mental health needs must be a priority for all institutions. Further, research suggests that the mental health issues are exacerbated for racialized students and students from marginalized backgrounds, yet very few models or plans take into account the unique perspectives and needs of these students. This paper explores key aspects of Indigenous Philosophies that have been adopted in one post-secondary plan to address mental health challenges and issues on campus.
