The battle for racial justice has gone in cycles of convergence, divergence, and reclamation (C-D-R; Thompson Dorsey & Venzant Chambers, 2014). What is not addressed but consistently seen in the C-D-R cycle is Black resistance, a consistent centerpiece in challenging white dominance and the push for liberation, warranting inquiry into the role of rebellion in the C-D-R Cycle. Focusing on the United States context, this paper argues that rebellion is a centerpiece of the C-D-R cycle, fueling the protection of white interests and representing the agency that oppressed people have in the pursuit of their freedom. Through affirming rebellion as a response to cyclical white supremacy, we can move towards the institutionalization of education as a practice of freedom.
