Science instruction in the United States is guided by the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and related state standards and frameworks. Although neuroscience is of relevance to education and of interest to students and educators, we have very little in our science standards on neuroscience. In this paper, we share an example of integrating neuroscience concepts with the NGSS and California science standards, by leveraging a real-world example of interest and relevance to young people: sports and exercise. We believe that this work is crucial for physical and mental health, as well as broadening students’ participation in STEM learning and promoting equitable access to K-12 science education.
