Theories of care in education have failed to adequately take into account current hyperpolarized political environments that often prioritize capitalist and neoliberal values, such as competition, hostility, and aggression. Within this context, progressive educators have reinforced countercultural values associated with restorative care, prioritizing healthy relationships and systems of equity and inclusion. This research seeks to describe restorative care practices and illuminate the dangerous path educators navigate within hyperpolarized political and educational environments. Restorative care seeks to delegitimize and supplant hierarchies of power and systems of privilege that benefit few, opting for practices and policies that reinforce an inclusive environment that works for all children.
