This paper considers popular podcasts as tools of cultural brokerage in teacher preparation. Utilizing Discourse Analysis and drawing from community cultural wealth (CCW), we examined the “Mobb Deep, Shook Ones, Pt. II” episode of Song Exploder and the “Rap on Trial” episode of Hidden Brain to address two research questions: 1) What does a discourse analysis of popular podcasts reveal about CCW? 2) How can a discussion of this revealed CCW inform teacher preparation? Our findings indicate that artists sharing detailed stories of their creative process in podcasts helps to transform understandings of historically underrepresented and criticized genres. We posit that such media texts can serve as effective tools of cultural brokerage in teacher preparation to disrupt harmful, normative discourses.
