Transformativist Measurement Development Methodology: Using Mixed Methods to Integrate Evidence of Validity for Instrument Revision

Fri, April 12, 3:05 to 4:35pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 100, Room 118C

Abstract

A transformativist, mixed methods methodology is a participant-empowered approach to measurement development that produces a statistically and structurally sound instrument that elevates the voice and agency of the community whose lived experience is being defined (Leach Sankofa, 2023). In this three-strand sequential mixed methods study, we applied a transformativist, mixed methods methodology to revise a child abuse knowledge test for early childhood education providers. In the first strand (Quan 1), we examined the factor structure of the knowledge test. Based on these results, we modified the items. In the second strand (Qual), we conducted cognitive interviews to improve the instructions and items. In the third stand (Quan 2), we administered the revised knowledge test and conducted a confirmatory factor analysis.
