When learning how to learn (LHtL), students engage in implementing ways of thinking that lead them to take ownership of their learning and adopt evidenced-based learning techniques that transform them into self-directed learners. This paper describes the implementation of human-centered design processes to develop a workshop that aims to prepare teaching assistants to integrate LHtL techniques in higher education courses. It also examines the impact of the workshop on the TAs’ integration of LHtL techniques in their courses. Findings indicated that an effective TAs workshop must include teaching about how people learn in addition to a focused set of LHtL techniques that can be directly associated with teaching tips or resources that TAs can easily apply as students and teachers.
