Paulo Freire was a man of deep faith and one who significantly contributed to the thinking and action of liberation theology through his problem-posing literacy education approach, the conscientization process, and his concept of the prophetic church. The expression of this church is one that looks to liberate through love and hope, actively participating in challenging oppressive economic, social, and religious systems. To that end, this paper provides and overview of liberation theology, highlighting Freire’s important contribution and why we should know, underscoring the implications for educators, social justice workers, and all those looking to foster a more loving, just, and right world.
