Teaching for Citizenship in the United States: Teachers’ Beliefs About the Aims of Civic Education

Sun, April 14, 3:05 to 4:35pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

The following literature review examines what existing research suggests about teaching for citizenship in the United States. In particular, how Social Science teachers’ beliefs about the aims of civic education interconnect with their teaching. The results reveal what problems the educators encounter and what solutions may be offered to address the central problems of practice. The findings also suggest that there is a scarcity of scholarly literature qualitatively investigating American teachers’ beliefs about the aims of civic education and how they implement them in their teaching, as well as a lack of studies considering U.S. teachers in the international context and comparing them with educators from other countries.
