Recruitment and Coaching Strategies to Support a Pipeline of Black and Latinx Male Principals (Poster 12)

Fri, April 12, 9:35 to 11:05am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

Our Educational Leadership (EDL) program collaborated with a large urban district to provide coaching support for 28 principals. Administrators were identified through university faculty to increase and retain the number of Black and Latinx male principals in the district. Utilization-focused program evaluation (Patton, 2008) was used to examine coaching practices that acknowledged equity issues in the district. Results revealed the need for career mapping, instructional leadership, mentorship, and equity-centered coaching practices from coaches. An inquiry cycle allowed for a consultee-centered approach to help principals address anti-racist teaching practices and cultural proficiency among teachers. These supports foster strong learning climates, aligning with how principals most influence student achievement with lessons for ways university preparation programs can collaborate with large urban districts.
