The emergence of generative artificial intelligence (GAI) such as ChatGPT and GPT 4 (GAI) has drawn attention to its potentials in various domains such as qualitative research. This scoping review provides a comprehensive synthesis of the potentials and challenges of GAI within the scope of qualitative research. Findings indicate that GAI tools can offer considerable assistance in qualitative research, including identifying research gaps, providing methodological suggestions, facilitating data collection, aiding in data coding and thematic analysis, and contributing to the writing and editing process. Potential drawbacks, include question regurgitation, limited capability for coherent literature reviews synthesis, inaccuracies in methodological suggestions, inherent biases in data collection, validity threats in data analysis, and ethical concerns in report writing
