Making It Matter: Black Students' Perspectives on Accessing Inclusive Higher Education Spaces

Sat, April 13, 9:35 to 11:05am, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Floor: Level 3, Room 303

Abstract

This pilot is part of a larger study to understand the academic experiences of students with Intellectual and developmental disability (IDD) attending classes as part of participation in an inclusive higher education (IHE) program, with specific attention given to their access to course materials and participating in the classroom instruction and learning. The number of students with IDD is increasing in higher education because of IHE programs and initiatives developing in the US. However, there is a need to better understand academic access and experiences of BIPOC students with IDD. This study has implications for IHE programs and staff as we seek ways to better support BIPOC students with IDD disabilities in higher education programs.
