Relations of Family Intellectual and Recreational Environment With Child Development

Fri, April 12, 3:05 to 4:35pm, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Floor: Level 3, Room 302

Abstract

The family environment plays a pivotal role in shaping child development. However, little is known about how specific family environment dimensions interact with the neighborhood environment to influence child development. This study aims to examine the following research questions: a) how do family environments (the intellectual-cultural environment, the actively-recreational environment) influence children’s different developmental domains, b) how does the neighborhood environment (neighborhood deprivation and threat) moderate the relations between family environment and child development? Our findings suggest that the role of the family environment in child development varies depending on the neighborhood context in which children reside. These insights have important implications for childcare, education, and policy, providing guidance to promote healthy child development.
