Educator Beliefs on AI Recommendation Systems: An Exploratory Thematic Analysis

Fri, April 12, 7:45 to 9:15am, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Floor: Level 3, Room 301

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) recommendation systems that offer advice by predicting future outcomes and needs are still limited in K12 education and research; however, they have been slowly gaining traction in higher education. This exploratory research uses thematic analysis to better understand educator beliefs on using algorithmic advice. 121 educators participated in this exploratory research, as part of a larger dissertation study, from the crowdsourcing research platform Prolific. Preliminary themes include both positive and negative aspects associated with each theme. These themes include: (1) AI as a partner, (2) preventing bias, (3) hostile teaching environment, and (4) potential student impacts.
