What Would Dewey Think? John Dewey and Continental Philosophy, Revisited in Politically Fractious Times

Sat, April 13, 9:35 to 11:05am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

Our Educational Theorizing Project features international scholars who have been engaged in a close reading of John Dewey and various ‘Continental Tradition’ scholars’ writing on education and pedagogy. Our latest presentations focus on how Dewey’s scholarly works, published in an earlier time of complexity and change, relate to current politics. We read Dewey amidst politically fractious times; we witness the further politicization of education and even attacks on academic freedom (Dewey was an AAUP co-founder). We provide a generative approach to educational study and practice, responsive to the multi-faceted crises contextualizing contemporary education. We argue that rereading Dewey in relation to education, Erziehung, and pedagogy, is still very relevant as a comparative project.
