Access, Inequality, and Representation: Youth Narratives on School Curricula and Civic Engagement (Poster 4)

Sun, April 14, 9:35 to 11:05am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

Questions related to educational access, racial and social inequality, and equitable representation are core issues addressed by youth activism and civic engagement. This poster will focus on youths’ interpretations of and responses to these issues in an intergenerational social inquiry discussion and youth civic engagement research project. Meeting biweekly, virtually and in person, 25 youths, and their researcher-mentors, grapple with critical educational and social problems and conceptualize, conduct, and write about community-based research. Projects range from racial bias in school access and curricula to health equity to urban displacement of historically marginalized groups. Focused on youth research, the presentation will center youths’ oral and written discourses, reflected in their activist research and accounts of how research can inform meaningful change.
