Racialized Social Networks, Instructional Advice, and Retention of Teachers of Color

Sat, April 13, 3:05 to 4:35pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

Given the high rates of turnover in the field overall, as well as for teachers of color
specifically, researchers have begun to explore the experiences of teachers of color inside of
schools—the organizational factors that contribute to retention. In this paper, we explore the
instructional advice networks of teachers of color in high schools to understand the nature of
support structures and to illuminate strategies to improve teacher support.
