The Impact of Mentoring Relationships on Social Capital in the Keystone Education Yields Success (KEYS) Program (Poster 26)

Sun, April 14, 7:45 to 9:15am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

Through a qualitative study of the mentoring relationships formed between facilitators and students in the KEYS program in Pennsylvania, this paper investigates three problems related to community college student retention and success. The first problem concerns our limited understanding of the implementation process at individual community colleges due to the heterogeneity of community college structures, services, and populations served. The second problem is that comprehensive student retention programs, such as the KEYS program, are understudied in the literature on community college student support. The third problem relates to our deficit of understanding about how mentoring relationships, such as the student-facilitator relationships in the KEYS program, can positively or negatively impact student success.
