Chasing Her Dreams: Navigating Racial and Gender Injustices

Sat, April 13, 1:15 to 2:45pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

When African American girls are in Advanced Placement, Gifted, or Honors classes, they are often the minority, especially in predominantly White schools. These girls find themselves in classrooms with peers and teachers who are culturally different from them. The personal narrative will be situated in the context of existing literature. Ford’s (2013) Female Achievement Model for Excellence (F2AME) is used as a lens to analyze personal narratives. What emerges from this paper adds to the much-needed research on the academic experiences of young high, achieving Black girls from their perspectives.
