Exploring Barriers and Challenges in Academic Experiences of Neurodivergent Learners

Sat, April 13, 9:35 to 11:05am, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Floor: Level 3, Room 303

Abstract

Neurodiversity is gaining increasing interest in higher education as DEI initiatives continue to develop and garner support. With the appropriate support neurodivergent learners can not only have positive experiences in academia but can also find opportunities to thrive. This study explores the barriers many neurodivergent learners experience in academia and seeks to provide recommendations for addressing those challenges. There are three primary areas by which the study was structured, a social or peer to peer component, the instructor role, and the institutional connection for the neurodivergent learner. This session will explore the Interventions and support in higher education that can provide inclusive and equitable learning environments for both neurotypical and neurodiverse students.
