Using Network Software to Model Collective Identity in a Classroom

Sun, April 14, 11:25am to 12:55pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

The Funds of Identity framework has become a popular tool in the learning sciences for understanding the resources learners bring to the classroom, particularly from home everyday life. This study proposes to add to the understanding of funds of identity by exploring how a digital tool can be used to elicit and mobilize funds of identity. Using the Net.Create network visualization software, we supported 5th- and 6th-grade students in representing their collective funds of identity as part of a researcher-led unit on data literacy. Our analysis shows how this tool supported learners in their articulation and a summary of the ideas they viewed as central to their identity.
