Doctoral education in science and engineering (S&E) is pivotal for national innovation and progress. In the Global South, countries like Chile invest in these programs to bridge gaps with developed nations. This study uses the profile of 689 recent PhD graduates in S&E to investigate how student and program characteristics influence employment in the State, industry, and academia. The majority find roles in academia, but notably, women are more likely to move to government positions. This shift hints at potential gender disparities in academia and reveals the evolving role of women in S&E within governmental sectors in Chile. The findings offer insights for policy and academic pathways.
