“It’s Good, These Graphic Novels for Us”: Picture Books and Adult Multilingual Language Learners

Abstract

Picturebooks provide opportunities for developing literacy skills in everyday life contexts for adult multilingual language learners (MLLs). In multilingual education, multimodality (signs, gestures, illustrations, etc.) is known to support meaning making (García, 2018). Not only do illustrations provide support for meaning making, but the possibilities for intergenerational literacy are promising (Quintero, 2008). In this article, I will discuss how adult MLLs use children’s and adolescent literature with multimodal components to improve their literacy skills, engage in intergenerational literacy practices with their children, and develop critical consciousness and dialogue with one another (Freire, 2018).
