Recruiting Black Men to Teach: Comparing Motivation to Precollegiate Educational Experiences

Thu, April 11, 9:00 to 10:30am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

Although support programs exist to recruit and support Black men who want to become teachers, the number of Black men applying to college to become teachers is significantly low when compared to other other demographic groups. Research suggests that the negative educational experiences of Black men may deter them from pursuing a teaching career. A career in education is considered either unattainable or unattractive. This study compares the motivation of Black men currently enrolled in an undergraduate teaching program to their pre-collegiate educational experiences and builds on the growing body of research examining what motivates Black men to teach.
