Fri, April 12, 7:45 to 9:15am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 100, Room 113C

Abstract

William H. Holtzclaw founded Utica Industrial Institute and Normal School in 1902 in Utica, Mississippi. Utilizing primary source documents from collections at the William H. Holtzclaw Memorial Museum and Archives in Utica, Mississippi and the Mississippi Department of Archives and History in Jackson, Mississippi this study examines the role of Black labor in the construction and fundraising for the institution. This critical historical work is rooted in the work of James D. Anderson and William H. Watkins and examines the role of Black history and educational neglect in the state of Mississippi. The significance of this research is that it adds to the understanding of student labor in the under researched field of Black industrial education in the early 1900s.
