Dismantling Racial Injustice and Constructing Educational Possibilities: Lessons From AmeriCorps Programs in California’s Educational Ecosystem (Poster 9)

Fri, April 12, 7:45 to 9:15am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

Researchers continue to document the prevalence of educational disparities and outcomes endured by students of color from low-income backgrounds in the United States K-12 educational system. Focusing on eight AmeriCorps organizations, the author presents a case study to highlight the educational possibilities that AmeriCorps programs can offer to dismantle the educational disparities endured by this student demographic. Through the finding of this paper, the author argues that involvement in service programs create equitable learning environments for students of color in low-income communities while providing a double bottom-line return on investment: social-emotional support and mentoring for students as well as leadership and career training for young adults in AmeriCorps programs.
