Gifted Black males often work to overcome stereotypes placed before them as they navigate their educational journey. Considering that teachers often serve a critical role in the referrals of students for gifted programs, it behooves us to not only interrogate the relationship of teachers to developing this scholarly identity but their support of Black gifted males in their educational journey. This paper examines the representation and relationship of a Black female male teacher and her Black gifted male student in OWN’s David Makes Man using Carey’s framework around comprehensive mattering and conceptions of othermothering from Black Feminist Theory.
