Parents of children with autism tend to have high levels of stress and depression, which can impact quality of life and a multitude of other factors (Hayes & Watson, 2013). This study used meta-analytic techniques to synthesize 59 group design studies focused on reducing stress among parents of children with autism. The mean effect size of these interventions was g = 0.61 with results from meta-regression analysis suggesting that psychology-based interventions were more effective than applied behavior analysis-based interventions at reducing parent stress. Additional moderator analyses were conducted to better understand for whom and under what conditions the interventions were most effective. Strengths, limitations, and implications for practice are also discussed.
