Systemic Levers That Support Broad-Scale Institutional Change for Equity-Based Teaching: An Organizational Landscape Analysis

Sun, April 14, 1:15 to 2:45pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 100, Room 103A

Abstract

Making equity-based teaching the norm in college teaching requires an integrated systems approach whereby the state, institutions, academic leaders, disciplinary leaders, work in tandem to pull specific levers necessary for broad-scale institutional change to happen. The problem, however, is that no framework currently exists to guide systems toward broad-scale change for equity-based teaching. We offer a framework based on (1) analysis and synthesis of scholarship focused on components necessary for successful enactment and support of equity-minded teaching in higher education; (2) analysis of structures and outcomes of gateway courses; and (3) focus group interviews with stakeholders for college teaching improvement: Chief academic officers, faculty developers within universities, state higher education agencies, disciplinary associations, higher education associations/organizations, and funding agencies.
