In the wake of summer 2020, many universities released statements denouncing police brutality and renewing their diversity and equity efforts. Three years later, many Black students are unhappy with the progress made and promises that have gone unfulfilled. Using a case study design, this study explores how Black students at a southwestern university navigate and provide resistance to a controversial university tradition and how students feel about this controversy given the university’s racial justice and equity efforts. Given the sociopolitical climate and the attacks on diversity, equity, and inclusion work – the findings from this study can be used by higher education professionals to support Black students and to continue to promote equitable education spaces.
