Drawing on data from the NCES’s High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS: 09), this study examines why African American 9th graders discontinue their interest in pursuing a STEM career by 12th grade. The results indicate that demographics, coursework, and motivation factors impact the likelihood an African American student will remain interested in STEM throughout high school. Implications for the leaky STEM pipeline are presented in light of the results.
