Our work draws on an existing Research-practice partnership at one fully inclusive charter school with a shared aim of improving family engagement.
We draw on community cultural wealth as an
approach to bring an asset-based perspective to foster relationships and bridge families
and the school. We employ a participatory design research approach to collaboratively
design the implementation of student portfolios as a way to build curriculum-based
family engagement opportunities. Findings suggest that relationships, communication,
and academic rigor are integral components to building strong family engagement
opportunities.
