ChatGPT’s Potential to Create Texts for Reading Fluency Interventions With Minimal Prompting

Sat, April 13, 1:15 to 2:45pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

ChatGPT’s potential to create reading passages is a boon to celebrate for college professionals who support struggling college readers using high-interest instructional-level texts for reading fluency skill development of students they work with. The chatbot is capable of generating texts along desired specifications including grade level, length, and interest area. These specifications are likely to generate the “just right” level passages struggling readers need to make progress in their reading fluency skill development with practice and the support of a reading professional or tutor. This paper tested a two-step prompting sequence to generate texts with ChatGPT and conducted a readability analysis of the texts produced in comparison to a set of existing Informal Reading Inventory (IRI) source texts.
