Undergraduate Students’ Perceptions of and Experiences With Exemplars: A Mixed-Methods Study (Poster 38)

Thu, April 11, 9:00 to 10:30am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

The use of exemplars has gained traction in higher education as a way of making assessment criteria and performance standards clearer to learners. This mixed methods study investigated undergraduate students’ perceptions of and experiences with exemplars using two online survey instruments and one-on-one, in-depth interviews. Results show that a majority of undergraduate students had used exemplars. They also ranked online learning environments as receiving the most benefit from exemplars, followed by blended environments. Students’ perceived value of exemplars in online and blended learning environments was positively associated with their expectations of having their instructors to share exemplars and their experiences with annotated exemplars. There was also a strong, positive relationship between students’ use of annotated exemplars and their self-regulated learning.
