Systemic or structural racism systematically confers advantage to white people and disadvantage to people of color. Our education journals sometimes get involved in this broader system of racial discrimination unconsciously. Although some journals have stepped forward to address the issue of latent racial biases in publication, combating systemic racism still requires a systematic approach. Faced with the question of what scholarly journals can do to advance racial justice in education, this study adopts the publication life cycle as one framework to cross-examine the structures, processes, and outcomes by which education journals might address systemic racism in education settings, and propose reforms that authors believe will improve publication equity and quality as well as education outcomes based on those examinations.
