This systematic review investigates alignment optimization (AO) within the structural equation modeling (SEM) framework across empirical and simulation studies. The study aims to identify where AO has been utilized, evaluate its performance, and explore consistency across varying applications. By analyzing the conditions under which AO was employed and its adherence to best practices, the review provides a comprehensive understanding of AO’s application and performance. The findings will offer insights into AO’s strengths and limitations, contribute to a more nuanced understanding, and inform effective future development of the method. The study has broad implications for researchers across diverse disciplines, aiming to clarify inconsistencies, improve methodology, and inspire further research.
