How Is CHatGPT Changing the Way Students Write? An AI-Enabled Investigation

Thu, April 11, 4:20 to 5:50pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

We are in a paradoxical and unsettling moment at the intersection of writing and technology. On one hand, literacy and English Language Arts educators are learning to cultivate students’ pluralistic literacy discourses and celebrate the various ways that students can demonstrate linguistic proficiency (Baker-Bell, 2019; Lyiscott, 2021). On the other, AI-enabled writing technologies threaten to devalue non-standardized compositions and student voices. In this roundtable session, we explore the tensions and opportunities afforded by this paradox. We use AI-based analytic tools to see how students take up ChatGPT feedback in their writing, to compare student writing composed with and without ChatGPT, and finally, to explore the degree to interaction with ChatGPT moderates/mediates/changes/ students’ unique voices and styles.
