Abstract

After making significant structural changes in course architecture, adding near-peer instructional staff, and assessment strategies in Calculus I, we aim to understand: which course components were working well for students and which components need to be improved. We conducted this mixed methods study at a private “very high research university” in the Mid-Atlantic U.S. region via a questionnaire and a focus group. 43 students who took Calculus I in Fall 2022 ranked homework as the most helpful assessment that contributed to their learning and exams as least helpful. Participants ranked worksheets as the most helpful instructional component for them in navigating the class, followed by the hybrid structure. Most participants had a positive experience in this newly-structured Calculus I.
