Preservice Teachers' Interpretations of Classroom Technology: Analyzing Technology Integration Over Time

Sun, April 14, 9:35 to 11:05am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

Despite evidence of technology’s potential for increasing academic performance and student engagement, infusing technology into practice has been a continual struggle for educators. For preservice teachers specifically, modeling of the meaningful execution of technology by skilled mentors is essential. This study explores preservice teacher technology observations and perspectives of application in their practicum classrooms. Data was collected from 218 participants from Fall 2018 to Spring 2022 (with the exception of Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic’s effect on school systems). Findings suggest that despite increased technology use in schools during the COVID-19 pandemic, technology integration continues to be seen as an ‘add-on’ rather than central to the educational experience.
