An Introduction to the Concept and Measurement of Social and Emotional Learning Mindset (Poster 29)

Thu, April 11, 9:00 to 10:30am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

This study introduces the concept and measurement of social and emotional learning (SEL) mindset for use in education. After developing the construct and survey instrument, a sequential mixed methods study involving 157 secondary teachers from Pennsylvania was conducted, resulting in the emergence of three SEL mindset categories with distinct profiles (positive, neutral and negative SEL mindset). Practical implications include conveying the concept of SEL mindset during teacher professional development. Researchers should conduct a validity study of the instrument and explore the relationship between SEL mindset scores and different teacher training approaches, teacher satisfaction and retention rates, and student outcomes. The SEL mindset construct and instrument can be adapted using other SEL frameworks and used among teachers, coaches, and other professionals.
