¡HBCUs Importan! A Systematic Review of the Experiences of AfroLatinos and Latinos(a,e,x) at Historically Black Colleges and Universities

Sun, April 14, 9:35 to 11:05am, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Floor: Level 3, Room 307

Abstract

In our systematic review, we explored challenges and facilitators for Afrolatine and Latine student success and inclusion at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). By analyzing qualitative and quantitative studies, we synthesized relevant literature, identified knowledge gaps, and provided practical recommendations to support AfroLatine and Latine students at HBCUs. Using Bradley and Tillis' (2022) Afro-Latinidades conceptual framework, we view HBCUs as sacred spaces with the capacity to inclusively serve both Black and Latine students. The findings will enrich existing literature on student success, guiding educational practitioners, administrators, and policymakers in improving academic achievement and overall well-being of Afrolatine and Latine students at HBCUs.
