Over the last two years, 44 states have introduced legislation to restrict discussions of race and racism, but the impact of these initiatives on teacher job selection is unknown. Drawing on interviews with 12 teacher candidates in Florida, this paper demonstrates the impact of anti-CRT legislation on teacher candidates’ job searches. Findings suggest that the legislation has influenced the districts in which candidates have sought positions, in particular steering away certain groups of teacher candidates while leaving other groups undeterred. These legislative efforts could lead to important redistributions in teacher labor. As the teacher shortage continues to worsen, it is especially important for states and districts to understand these job selection decisions if they wish to effectively recruit new teachers.
