Exploring Students' Experiences With Navigating an Online Competency-Based Program

Sat, April 13, 7:45 to 9:15am, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Floor: Level 4, Franklin 11

Abstract

Self-paced instruction is a modality frequently implemented in online courses. Despite compelling benefits such as flexibility and learner control, studies have suggested that self-paced instruction creates several challenges for students. This study seeks to understand students’ experiences and challenges in a self-paced online competency-based course using a mixed-method case study design. Data included self-report surveys, in-depth interviews, and online observational data. Initial results suggest that while students reported challenges at the beginning of the self-paced program, most suggested the need for a shift in mindset and found effective strategies to navigate the competency-based program. The findings of this investigation offer insight into designing effective online self-paced competency-based programs.
