College Conocimiento and the Role of Family for Latina College-Goers

Fri, April 12, 4:55 to 6:25pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

Drawing on Acevedo-Gil’s (2017) model of college conocimiento —a seven stage college choice framework—that incorporates the intersectional identities of Latinas preparing for college, I conducted a qualitative study that explored how ten first-generation Latinas navigate through Acevedo-Gil’s college choice model. In turn, I contribute a new concept to Acevedo-Gil's model of college conocimiento with an emphasis on the role that family plays in supporting the college-going process.
