This paper presents theoretical foundations for informing and the design processes derived from the research and development of an online educational technology application called CompuTiles. CompuTiles uses design-based research (DBR) methodology for developing culturally relevant and sustaining computer science education (CRSC). The paper presents findings from the first phase of iterations for the design of CRSC curricular materials for Advanced Placement Computer Science Principles (AP CSP) courses. The design of CompuTiles aims to support meeting standards for implementing CRSC by leveraging Black textile traditions. In the development of the application, we found that the heritage knowledge of cloth and clothing making is valuable for informing CRSC research and design.
