The Development of Adolescent Students’ Self-Directed Learning Skills Within a Montessori Setting

Sat, April 13, 11:25am to 12:55pm, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Floor: Level 4, Room 407

Abstract

SDL skills enable individuals to excel academically and engage in lifelong learning. The Montessori method, which emphasizes independence, conscientiousness, and critical thinking, is well-suited for promoting SDL, however, empirical research is needed to corroborate this relationship. The present study employed a mixed-method design, combining surveys and interviews, to investigate the association between the Montessori environment and SDL skill development. Results indicate a positive correlation between the number of years spent in a Montessori program and students' SDL skills. Qualitative findings identify features such as autonomy support, scaffolded opportunities, and supportive teachers that contribute to SDL development. The study underscores the potential of the Montessori approach in nurturing self-directed learning among students, offering valuable insights for educational practices.
