We set out to explore the role of research, and more specifically, teacher inquiry, in informing the understanding of education students/future teachers about their work with students of diverse backgrounds. We were guided by the following question in our research - What might pre-service teachers learn about the school experiences of students of diverse backgrounds through a teacher inquiry research project? We examined the idea of teacher inquiry as a way for pre-service teachers to learn about the work of teachers. We explore teacher inquiry, conducted by pre-service teachers and guided by teacher educators in university-based education courses, as a way to address some of the questions at the core of tensions between university-based and school-based teacher education programs.
